To be honest there are varied opinions as to the correct answer to this question. In short if you can deliver a successful business it will matter little whether it is .com .eu or .ie. That being said, finding a good .com name that has not already been registered is a challenging waste of a few hours!
One think to consider though, it is no harm to protect yourself against "cyber squatting", whereby opportunists will register your name under some of the more popular domains and then look to sell them back to you. If you believe your idea or business has legs then you may consider registering some of the main domains if not already gone.
